History Samuel Smith, a well known butcher and dairy cattle seller from the North of England, Leeds, lent the original funding to his child John to purchase an old brewery in Tadcaster, Yorkshire. John Smith assumed control over the brewing company, which is now known as Samuel Smith.

Samuel Smith is popular for their favorable lagers.. Every one of their lagers, except for the Old Brewery Bitter and Yorkshire Stingo, are vegan. Also, the majority of Samuel Smith's lagers—some prominent exemptions being the Oatmeal Stout, Wheat Beer, Yorkshire Stingo, and Organic Cherry Fruit Beer—are blended exclusively with malt, jumps, yeast and water.
