The druids valued oak trees and water and believed you could hear the water spirits talking to each other. Aberlour is a Gaelic word meaning òmouth of the chattering burn’ (stream). Water and an oak tree still feature today on the Aberlour label. The distillery was built in 1879 by James Fleming, a grain merchant turned distiller, entrepreneur and laterîa great philanthropist. Our expertly crafted new spirit is usually double cask matured for a minimum of 12 years in the finest hand-picked Oloroso Sherry butts, and in American oak barrels.
