In 1885, Stanislao Cobianchi’s parents set the young man on a virtuous, ecclesial path, yet Stanislao had other ideas. He exchanged a life in the church for one of adventure. Stanislao traveled from Bologna to the Balkans, where he experienced exotic flavors from around the world. Returning home with his spoils of secret herbs and spices, Stanislao opened a distillery and named his perfectly balanced, bitter sweet Amaro after Princess Elena of Montenegro in honor of her wedding day. In 1906, he opened a new distillery to meet growing demand, and the distinctive drink soon became the toast of Italy. Legendary Italian poet, Gabriele D’Annunzio, famously called it the "liqueur of virtues." It appears Stanislao didn’t stray too far from his parents’ wishes after all. ICONIC ITALIAN LIQUEUR, SINCE 1885. Our Founder Stanislao Cobianchi wanted to create a bottle as unique as the elixir it contains. This called for something different, something distinct. And thus, our iconic bottle was born. Although revisited over the years, it has and will always keep its distinctive vial characteristic, reminiscent of a potion conjured through alchemy.

Our liquor was born in 1885 with the name Elisir Lungavita and immediately received notable recognition. 11 years later, marking the marriage of the charming Princess Elena of Montenegro to Prince Vittorio Emanuele III, Stanislao decided to dedicate his storied elixir to her royal highness, changing it’s name to Amaro Montenegro.
