The prickly pear is known in Mexico astuna(ahem – be careful not to confuse it with the fish) and is, in fact, the fruit of the paddle cactus (Opuntiaficus-indica). Savory and juicy pink bulbs blossom at the tips of the cactus leaves; the fruit is popularly used in everything from salad to ice cream.
