'Charles Nelson was born July 4, 1835, in Germany, but when Charles was 15, his father decided to move his family to America for a better life. A penniless Charles found himself man of the household when his father did not survive the overseas trip, so he and his brother took up their father's trade of making soap and candles so they could save enough money to move west to Ohio. There, a 17-year-old Charles entered the butcher business, where he met a number of fellow craftsmen who taught him
